Throughout the millennia, the Portuguese south and southwest coastlines around the Algarve have been places of reference for those who travelled along the Mediterranean. For the people who lived along this edge of western Europe, it has been a stage for cultural interchange, for the creation of myths, but also a prime source of fisheries with a great variety of excellent quality fish. Overtime, the geographical setting in this area has paved the way for unique seaside communities and seafarers.

Their lives, and the voices who tell of them, reveal peculiar maritime traditions. Through their toils, their joys and their sorrows, these people have forged new ways of life and livelihood, developed new practices for fish preservation and cooking, which resulted in a maritime gastronomic heritage marked by a strong territorial identity. From a close contact with these communities stemmed the desire to find out more about their reality, their sea and their fish.
